Singing our Way through Life

Songs, singing, hums, human voice stretching, waking up, yawning, opening, relaxing.  Group singing: toning together, singing together, harmony, transcendence, a touch of angelic wings.

Come with me on a journey into your deep soul sounds. Gather around the hearth of the heart, hum into the center of who you are, and relax with the knowledge that your voice is supported, and supportive to all around or within you. Deep Soul Singing grows!

Song is at the heart and soul of who we are. Many creation stories from around the world refer to our origins as coming from sound, the Om, Word, or Logos. From our first cry, a sign of wellness and healthy lungs, our voice is here to be heard. We have many songs through our lifetime, songs of childhood, songs of integrity, songs of love gone wrong and romances in the throes of passion; songs of release; songs of the spirit, and for the new born child; songs that are legacies of our ancestors and songs for the unborn. What are the songs of your journey?

Music and sound from the beginning of time have served many important functions: from drums to pass on messages from village to village, to observing Sabbath and joining in sacred ritual; from motivating soldiers to mending a broken heart; from passing on the history of a people to shouting “I am alive”. Some say sound even helped to raise the pyramids! All over the world, different rhythmic and tonal patterns have emerged from diverse cultures and groups of people. Compare the polyrhythms of Africa and the subtle rhythms of music from India, with a foxtrot or samba or a Viennese waltz.  While in Africa, I picked out the sound of the tribal drums from my host community while at a festival in a neighbouring village and knew a feeling of comfort and familiarity in an otherwise strange land.  What are your stories? How has music moved you through life?

Over the course of eight weeks starting September 19, we’ll explore our life journeys through songs, our voices and possibly listening to recordings of special music. Come, lets sing together and celebrate our lives.

Dates: 8 sessions: Monday evenings, September 19, 26, Oct 3, 17, 24, 31, Nov 7, 14

Exchange: $96

Location: TBA – Ottawa (Barrhaven), Ontario
